Why AI Depends on Your Data Strategy — And How Organizations Can Evolve with Confidence

While organizations are navigating increasingly complex data landscapes, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is arriving with extraordinary speed and impact. It is already reshaping business operations and how data is used, bringing both excitement and uncertainty.

This post explores how to design a data strategy that remains durable in the AI era by strengthening the foundations that AI ultimately depends on.

As AI accelerates, many organizations are asking a hard question: Will parts of today’s data and analytics work become obsolete?

Some believe AI will solve most data challenges, for instance, automating SQL, eliminating tickets to data teams, and enabling everyone to interact with data directly. Others remain cautious, questioning what is real and what is hype.

The reality is this: AI cannot fix poor data environments—it exposes and magnifies their weaknesses.

AI should not be viewed as a starting point. It is a downstream capability whose effectiveness depends squarely on the health of the underlying data ecosystem.

Why?

AI systems utilize data, algorithms, and computational power to simulate human intelligence. Data is therefore foundational to every AI model. Data is to AI what fuel is to a combustion engine. Just as engine performance depends on fuel quality, AI performance depends on the quality, integrity, and meaning of the data it is trained on. The classic “garbage in, garbage out” rule doesn’t disappear in AI. Rather, it is amplified.

This makes building a healthy data ecosystem more critical than ever.

For example, whether you install AI models from vendors or develop them in-house, often the first question that needs to be answered is: where is the data? There must be a clear mapping of data elements to the input of an AI system for it to function properly.

Also, while AI generates intelligence from data, the existing data must have a clear meaning in itself. Any ambiguity in the training data for AI systems will cause the unreliability of the models, like the skyscrapers built on sand. You need to have well-stewarded and curated data in order to have reliable insights from AI models.

How do we position ourselves so that we stay nimble as well as grounded in this dynamic AI age?

1. Hold on to the basics

Because data is the foundation of effective AI, the principles that guide healthy data ecosystems today will continue to determine success in the future. These include:

  • Establishing clear business ownership of data

  • Building strong data stewardship and curation practices

  • Balancing vendor platforms with in-house capabilities

  • Integrating data into operations through the domain-expert service model

These practices enable organizations to remain agile and effective in the face of change. A sound data strategy holds onto what is fundamentally true—providing stability today and positioning well for tomorrow.

Only when organizations stand on solid ground can they gain the confidence to be bold, adapting to new technologies with satisfactory outcomes.

2. Embrace new AI capabilities proactively

The impact of AI may rival, or exceed, that of computers in the last century. It moves forward relentlessly. The question is not whether to engage, but how.

Certain aspects of the data and analysis work will become AI-enabled, for example, SQL scripting. Currently, AI can already translate human language into SQL scripts. This is powerful because business users are able to interact with databases directly. They submit the queries to the underlying data sources through the AI engine in between, getting results back almost instantaneously. Compared to the weeks or even longer waiting times when they submit tickets to the data team to get the same data, they gain efficiency and autonomy. Also, the unobstructed communication with data will spark greater curiosity and creativity, which unlocks new and expanding potential of data.

This does not diminish the role of data professionals. Instead, it elevates it.

Data analysts and domain experts will increasingly offload routine tasks to AI while focusing on higher-value and more creative responsibilities: shaping data meaning, integrating insights into operations, coaching, and consulting business partners - for example, the domain expert’s role as trailblazer, consultant, and coach becomes not less, but even more essential in the AI era.

Why This Matters Now

AI-enabled data solutions and tools are being developed and delivered every day. It is a new reality that we are living right now.

Rather than wondering whether today’s work will matter tomorrow, we can take a confident posture, discerning what’s going to change and what is here to stay. Organizations will set themselves up for success if they cast the right vision, structure their teams with the right skill set, and strategically adapt their operating model to the technology evolution.

Executive Takeaway

  1. AI is already reshaping business operations—and its influence will only accelerate.

  2. AI does not replace the need for strong data foundations; it depends on them. Poor data limits AI, while healthy data ecosystems unlock its potential.

  3. A durable data strategy strengthens core infrastructure and governance while evolving skills, roles, and service models to harness AI responsibly and effectively.

In the AI era, data strategy is no longer about keeping up with technology—it is about designing an ecosystem that intentionally empowers people to stay healthy and adaptable, consistently delivering business value.
